Down down down.

I'm down another 0.6 lbs this week. That makes for a total of almost 7lbs since diet club started and 17lbs since I Weighed myself at my heaviest post
Baby.
Yay!
What have I done? Same as the last few weeks: a mainly vegetarian diet.
I would likely have been down another half pound, but I overindulged last night with stuffed mushrooms, cake etc.
What's motivating me now: two weddings and, of course, good health.
My sisters wedding is just three short months away and mine is 13 months away.
By the time my sister gets Marie's I hope to be down to 199 (12 pounds to go) and by the time I get married I hope to be down to 160.
Here's hoping I can make it. :)

Sorry I've been gone so long.

Hi everyone! I just realized it's been a while since I last wrote. First and foremost, I'm still on the wagon (insert cheering crowds and fanfare here). I am almost eating an entirely vegetarian diet and feel a million times better for it. I don't think I am shedding a ton of weight, but I definitely feel healthier and more energized. Since watching the documentary, Forks Over Knives, I have eaten one meal that consisted of ground beef. What beef was on my plate was transferred to Amo's plate. I just couldn't do it. I just have no desire to eat it at all. I eat dairy on a rare occasion. I had a couple bites of ice cream during her school's ice cream social and it was disgusting. It honestly tasted likely a creamy chemical concoction. Not appetizing at all. I usually have an egg every other day, most often mixed in to my two minute muffin. Trail mix has become our new best friend around here. Amo in particular loves the stuff. He says it's because of the chocolate chips I put in it. I think he's right. Other than that, there's not much going on around here. I haven't been getting as much exercise as I'd like, but I am still getting over a month long virus and just starting to feel a little more like my old self. Last I weighed in I was 214. I weigh in again on Tuesday, so I will keep you all posted. :) I'm sure I have more to tell, but I'll save that for tomorrow's entry.

Grrrrr

A measly half pound: that's how much I lost this week.
I have cut out red meat and chicken, pork and dairy. I've cut down my egg and fish consumption. I have cut out refined white sugar, artificial sweeteners and coffee.
I eat a whole food plant based diet. Lots of fruits and veg, whole grains and no ingredients I can't pronounce or don't know what they are. If it sounds like a man made chemical I just don't eat it.
I have not had chocolate, cookies or chips. I have not had cake. I have had one glass of wine in a month (last night after my disappointing weigh in) and I didn't even drink it all.
So what else can I change? I need to drink more water and walk more.
We have stopped buying bottles water and have yet to buy a brita. I know our tap water is perfectly safe, I just can't get passed the chlorine smell I guess. Due to yucky weather and a sick miss V, I haven't been walking 50 mins each day either.
Soft this week I vow to get over my tap water issues and walk more without excuses.
Here's hoping next Tuesday brings a smaller number on the scale and brighter blog post.

No meat for me... And did I mention I'm not pregnant?

Today was my daughter's first communion. Following mass we headed to my mum's for lunch and cake. I made it through without totally indulging!
I started with a two minute muffin and a cuppa tea, which held me over until about one.
Although my mum put on a delicious spread, I stuck to what I knew was vegetarian and had pronounceable ingredients. I ate hummus, crackers, olives and fruit. I skipped the sandwich wraps and cheese and ate ONE, that's right 1, chip.
I skipped the cake too. Oh, and the wine. Shocker!
I indulged only slightly. My inlaws sent over a heavenly looking tiramisu square. I cut the end off and ate, literally, two bites. What I had was delicious, but totally enough.
I drank water and lots of it.
I came home starving. I ate some wholewhear crackers, salsa and olives while my incredible handsome, wonderfully creative and awesomely talented (no he did not tell me to write that) honey, made me a scrumptious veggie stir fry wrap with homemade guacamole dressing. So yummy.
For dessert I had a banana a cuppa tea with honey and some soy nuts.

By the way, did I mention that I am not pregnant?
While setting up an exhibit yesterday I ran into my old karate instructor. After telling me how busy he was and how incredible his life was he asked if I was still doing the "photo-graphy" (yes, he said it just like that after I just finished telling him I was setting up my photography exhibit).
I explained to him that yes, I was and that I was off on maternity leave. What does he do? He gestures towards and looks at my belly and says "yeah I see that". What the hell was that supposed to mean?! Was that a "yeah I can tell since you still look like the Goodyear blimp" or "yeah, when are you due?"
I was in such a state of shock at his incredible insensitivity that I could barely speak. I simply went on to tell him that my son was six months old and that I was hoping to spend my life doing what I love. In his usual cocky manner he went on to say that he "wanted to do the same", but "wait. Oh yeah, (he) already (was)". I told him he was a dick and walked away.
As I left the sports complex we were bth setting up at, I ran into a cluster of MMA girls... tits up, ass out. Perfect bodies that only adde fuel to my emotional fire. I sat in the car and cried.
Today, I thought of all the things I should have said, all the ways I could have hurt him. There are only two words that come to mind, neither of which combine to make an appropriate blog worthy statement. ;)
Here's to another great day tomorrow!

Have you tried something new lately?

Today is a day for new recipes. This morning I had a two minute muffin. This whole grain hearty bread like breakfast consists of agave nectar, flax, wheat germ, (a few other grains that I can't remember the names of), baking soda and one egg. I tried to find an egg substitute at our local grocer, but had no luck. (anyone know if there is such a thing?). All ingredients go into a mug and into the microwave for two mins. I wish I had of taken s photo, it puffed right up over the top of the mug! I popped it onto a plate and put some natural jam on it.
Delicious!
Lunch was a whole grain and veggie sandwich (fried mushrooms, cucumber and tomato) with some kale chips.
The sandwich was good. Used a tiny bit of mayo and a bit of good earth spread (not-margarine margarine). The kale chips were ok for what they are. Basically you take some kale and break off bite size leafy great pieces. Place pieces on a baking sheet with a drizzle of olive oil and some seasoned salt. It gave me the crunch that I love with my sandwich.
As for dinner, our good friends are making something yummy for us. I've been told portabello mushrooms are on the menu so I'm sure it will be awesome!

Veggies!!!! (yesterday's post)

Total meatless day today!
Whole grain bread, good earth spread and natural jam for breakie.
Veggie fajitas and some sweet potato fries for lunch and took the other half home for dinner.
Delish meat free day!

Forks. Definitely forks.

Yesterday I watched a documentary called Forks Over Knives. If you've seen it, you'll understand why a low carb diet is no longer an option for me.

The documentary talks about the roll animal protein plays in the progression of cancer and heart disease. Scientific research has proven that a diet high in animal protein increases cancer mortality rates as well as heart disease. According to these studies, a whole food plant based diet cannot only decrease a person's chances of getting these diseases, but also sometimes reverse the effects of these diseases.

Tests showed that a diet of 20% animal protein exponentially increases the risk of cancer and heart disease. A diet consisting of 5% animal protein on the other hand exponentially DECREASED the risk of cancer and heart disease.

With all this said (and a ton of other information from the documentary), I have decided to try and adopt a much more plant based diet. In the past (my teen years), I have attempted to become a vegan. With a lack of understanding and knowledge I was unsuccessful. Today, I feel more informed and much more capable of changing my lifestyle and eating habits.

Now, I know you are probably thinking, but what about protein. A plant based diet does contain protein and there are there are other was to get the protein that you need; and our protein requirements are not as high as we have been lead to believe.

Yesterday's grocery purchases included only fruits and vegetables, lentils, whole grains an fish. I figure I can't go vegan in a day, and fish is the best option at this point.

So last night it was a delicious veggie stir fry and cantaloupe for dessert. This morning, once I can get into my kitchen again, I will be having one piece of while grain bread with natural peanut butter and an all fruit (and a little pectin) jam.

I know this option may not be for everyone, but I am hoping that it will work for me. I want to grow old, watch my children grow and keep my family healthy. If this goes as planned I truly believe that this will give me the best chance of doing just that.

For those of you who want to check it out, I believe the website is www.forksoverknives.com.

Busy Busy Busy!

I have been living in a nut house.
So, for the last month, I haven't had a stove. For the last three weeks I have had no kitchen cabinets. For the last two weeks I have had no counters. For three days we survived without a sink in our kitchen. Today, I have cabinets, a sink (and a half), a stove and some makeshift counters. Within the next week I will have real counter tops, a pantry to store my food in, a dishwasher (for the first time in three years!), cabinet doors and even a nice new floor. Maybe then I will want to clean again.
Needless to say, with renos and trying to get organized, I have not had five minutes to myself today and zero time to walk. However, none of this stopped me from sticking to my diet today.
Breakfast was vanilla cottage cheese and coffee. Lunch was once piece of whole grain bread with margarine, mayo and low fat turkey breast. I had two low carb cookies for my snack with a cup of coffee and dinner was 4 scrambled eggs with feta and roasted red pepper and a bottle of water. Dessert, was another low carb cookie. Probably not the best choice, but it beat the alternative.
Here's to a slightly less hectic day tomorrow and a clean house. :)

Sweet morning

Sweet cottage cheese for breakie and a morning walk with a sweet girl. Does life get any sweeter on a no carb diet? ;)

So so sorta diet day

Okey dokey. Today started of with cottage cheese (vanilla & sweetener) and blackberries and an iced coffee with sugar free vanilla.
I went to McDs to get breakie for my honey and got myself a sausage... I honestly have a weak spot for them.
I spent the day running around with my sister today doing wedding errands, so lunch was on the road. We popped into lone star where I splurged and had the lunch fajita. Way too many carbs in the three small fajitas I had, not to mention the nachos. Nevertheless, dinner was Caesar salad (I left my croutons) and meatballs (in BBQ said ... I know I know too many carbs).
I drank diet coke and not nearly enough water today. Then, when I came home and put the kids to bed I was hungry, so I had more cottage cheese.
Now, I know this is not what you would call the most ideal diet menu. However, I did not each chocolate or cookies, I did not pig out unnecessarily on crap and I was conscious of what I was putting in my body. So, although not a great day, it certainly was not horrendous.
As for the company today, it was awesome! I had a great time a s can't wait for my sister's big day!
In the meantime, diet club stars tomorrow morning. I wonder if I've lost anything? :)

Keeping busy cuts calories!

So, after painting the kithen ceiling, hanging two curtain rods, shopping and rearranging my boy's room, I enjoyed a delicious dinner of chicken, veggies, avocado hummus, naan bread and salad. Have I mentioned that I have the best fiance ever? ;) i even drank four bottles of water! As a special afternoon treat I enjoyed a large iced coffee from McDs with sugar free vanilla flavour. So yummy!

Filling the void...

photomap

I have a sweet tooth. This is obviously a huge challenge when on a low carb diet. Crystal lite seems to help a little and also fills my rumbly belly.

I'm bored and therefor hungry.

Taking a coffee and movie break after dancing with my boy. Feeling much more enegize and alive today. What was for luch today? One piece of while grain toast with hummus and chicken salad, one cup of broccoli salad and a bottle and a half of water.

Walking.

Day 2: another beautiful morning and refreshing 25 minute morning walk. Breakfast was a cup of coffee with cream and sweetener, a bottle of water and some cottage cheese with blueberries, vanilla and sweetener.

Tea.... it's my cure-all.

It's been too long

It's been a year since my last post. That's right; 365 days. In that time so much has happened, so much has changed.
About six weeks after my last post I found out I was pregnant. So much for losing some weight before packing on some baby pounds. Nevertheless, I only gained 17lbs during my pregnancy. I was 237 lbs when I went into labour.
Niven Paulino Ruberto was born on October 10, 2011 and weighed in at 8 lbs 5 oz. He was much smaller than I imagined since everyone thought I was going to have a 10 lbs turkey.
It didn't take long to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight of 220 lbs, but I am stuck there, fluctuating up and down 3 to 5 lbs and feeling like a total blimp. As much as it kills me to say it, today I am tipping the scales at 224.8 lbs.
Shit.
I have tried everything. The trouble is I am addicted to food. I almost wrote that I love food, but I don't think that I do. I just can't stop eating. Sometimes I eat things that I don't even like the taste of. It is, without a doubt, an addiction.
I recently went to the doctor to inquire about a lap band. For those of you who don't know, the lap band is a device used to restrict the amount of food your stomach can hold at one time. Given that I have Benign Intracranial Hypertension (Pseudo-tumor Cerebri), a neurological ailment likely affected by excess weight, I thought the lap band surgery may be covered by OHIP. It is not.
My options are: gastric bypass or diet and exercise. I have a number of friends who have done remarkably well with gastric bypass but, for me, it is not an option. So, back to the drawing board we go.
Luckily I have a wonderful support system and my mum came up with a brilliant idea to help me (us) stay on track. We are starting a diet group! Each member chooses a diet or plan that works best for them and once a week we will meet up, weigh in, share recipes, swap clothes as our waste lines shrink, share recipes and enjoy a cup of coffee and a light snack... not to mention good company.
As of now, we have four members. The three women that have joined me are not only my family, but my best friends also.
So, determined not to let myself or my support system down, I woke up this morning with a plan. I am back to the low carb diet and exercise.
For breakfast I had about 1/2 cup of vanilla cottage cheese and a cup of coffee with cream and sweetener. I then packed up both kids and walked Miss V to school. Round trip, this walk took about 25 minutes. I have to walk back to the school this afternoon, so that will be a whopping 50 minutes of exercise for me today! This is great considering I have done absolutely no exercise for a very very long time.
It seems as though I have a good start on this new plan. My short term goal is to get out walking for 50 minutes at least three times a week. My next goal: to lose 25lbs before my sister's wedding on September 1, 2012. And, my long term goal: to reach my ideal weight of 150 lbs by June of 2013.
I am not sure if anyone will read this blog, given that I've started and stopped it so many times, but I intend to write on here daily to ensure I stay on track and remain focused.
To all of you out there in the same boat as me; stay strong, stay focused and be healthy!
